Centrist Emmanuel Macron elected new President of France as voters reject far right Marine le Pen; congratulatory notes pour in from across the world on the historic day.

Independent Centrist Emmanuel Macron has been elected as the youngest President of France.

The En Marche leader had 65 percent support with four-fifths of votes counted, while his rival Far right leader Marine Le Pen had 36 percent.

Addressing his supporters after the big win, Emmanuel Macron said he would fight the divisions in the country. He added that even as a new page is opening in France’s history, his presidency will be one of hope and renewed confidence.

It was the first time in decades that France has elected a leader from outside the mainstream parties.

Unknown three years ago, former economy minsiter Macron is now poised to become one of Europe’s most powerful leaders, bringing with him a hugely ambitious agenda of political and economic reform for France and the European Union.

US President Donald Trump congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his victory in France’s presidential election. Trump tweeted that he looks very forward to working with him.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also scongratulated Emmanuel Macron. In a statement, Trudeau said that the he looks forward to work on a progressive agenda to promote international security, increase collaboration in science and technology, and create good, middle class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.

British Prime Minister Theresa May also called the French president-elect Emmanuel Macron following his election victory.

The leaders also briefly discussed Brexit and Downing Street spokesperson said that Prime Minister May reiterated that the UK wants a strong partnership with a secure and prosperous EU after the exit.
