Dead toll rises 151:Lanka struggles against flood
The death toll from devastating floods in Sri Lanka rose to 151 on Sunday as rescuers pulled out more bodies from mudslides, triggered by the country’s worst torrential rains since 2003.
Heavy rains have displaced nearly half a million people in the island nation. Sri Lanka has sought international assistance to tackle the crisis.
India, the first country to respond, dispatched three Navy ships with emergency supplies to help Sri Lanka.
The adverse weather conditions have caused flooding and landslides in as many as 15 districts with southern district of Galle being the worst-hit. According to officials Nilawala River is facing the possibility of a dam burst, which can put the entire Matara town under water.
Sri Lanka’s tri-forces personnel including more than 1,000 Army troops were engaged in the rescue and relief operations.
