PM Modi holds bilateral talks with Chinsese Prez. Xi Jinping
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Chinese president XI Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit meet in Astana.
While expressing gratitude to the Chinese leadership for their cooperation in securing India’s membership to SCO, Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the important economic reforms initiated by his govt. He also said that the people, particularly the youth of both the countries is fairly optimistic about the future.
The two leaders held talks in a cordial atmosphere. India and China agreed that the two nations can provide stability in times of global uncertainty. More importantly the leaders concurred relations between the two nations should move forward to ensure that the differences do not become disputes.
In his bid to boost bilateral relations, Prime Minister Modi has been utilizing every opportunity to meet with Chinese President over the past three years. The two leaders have been initiating efforts since past three years and have met once in all calender years starting 2014.
In 2014 the two leaders met in Ahmedabad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President made a statement of sorts when they walked together at the Sabarmati Riverfront ushering in a new era of Sino-India ties. PM Modi set aside protocol and received President Xi in the Gujarat and not in Delhi.
In July 2015, the leaders met in UFA Russia on the sidelines of the 7th BRICS Summit. It was during this meet that India’s membership to the Beijing based organisation was confirmed.
In September 2016 the two leaders met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, China. Their bilateral then came in the backdrop of several contentious issues. Prime Minister Modi spelled out India’s concerns in his talks with Xi. This bilateral came after China stalled the listing of Pakistan-based terrorist groups in the UN, it’s opposition to India’s membership at the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor CPEC which runs through Pakistan- occupied Kashmir.
In 2016, bilateral trade and commerce between the two countries stood at $70.8 billion. Despite some roadblocks, Economic relations between the two countries continue to expand. The efforts to improve the relations continue with PM Modi extending the hands of friendship at every available opportunity and there is hope that such exchanges will lead to greater understanding and even better trade and bilateral ties.
Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held meeting with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The two leaders discussed a range of issues of bilateral and international interest.
