Nepal-China cross border : Nepal gets internet bandwidth from China
Nepal has started getting internet bandwidth from China. Minister for Information and Communication of Nepal, Mohan Bahadur Basnet inaugurated Nepal-China cross border optical fiber link at Kathmandu today.
On this occasion Basnet said that commercial operation of Nepal-China optical fiber link is a major milestone for development of internet infrastructure in Nepal.
The launch of commercial optical fiber link between state-owned Nepal Telecom and China Telecom Global has provided an additional internet route in landlocked Himalayan nation.
Till date India was the lone internet provider in Nepal.
According to Nepal Telecom officials, keeping in view the increasing use of internet in the country, Chinese fiber link is taken as an alternative source to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth demand. It is also expected to reduce internet cost due to competition.
The officials said that initially the speed of Chinese fiber link via Rasuwagadhi border will be 1.5 Gbps, which can be increased later on.
