Opposition candiddate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih wins maldives Presidential polls
The people of Maldives have voted out President Yameen and chosen Maldivian Democratic Party leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as their next President.
Yameen conceded defeat in a televised address.
The result was a major surprise, since most of Yameen’s political rivals were either in prison or in exile.
Solih received 58 percent of the popular vote, compared to Yameen’s 41 percent, though formal results are still to be declared.
Celebrations broke out across the 1,200-island tropical archipelago, which is a popular tourist destination.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Ibrahim Solih and congratulated him on his victory.
Prime Minister conveyed his good wishes for the strengthening of democracy, peace and prosperity in Maldives under Solih’s leadership.
Solih thanked the Prime Minister for his greetings and good wishes, and the two leaders agreed to work closely together to further strengthen their close, friendly and good neighbourly relations.
In a statement the Ministry of External Affairs said, “the election marks not only the triumph of democratic forces in the Maldives, but also reflects the firm commitment to the values of democracy and the rule of law.
In keeping with our ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy, India looks forward to working closely with the Maldives in further deepening our partnership”.
