Maldives SC to resume hearing on complaint filed by outgoing President Yameen

Maldives Supreme Court will resume the hearings Monday morning on complaint filed by outgoing President Abdulla Yameen to cancel the results of Presidential elections held last month.

President’s legal team presented their case and the Elections Commission’s lawyers offered its response during the first hearing held Sunday afternoon.

The full bench of the apex also heard from lawyers representing the joint opposition parties, who were allowed to enter the case as a third party.

The complaint was filed last week by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) led by President claiming it had received numerous complaints from their supporters.

A statement PPM said the vote was the most farcical election in living memory with vote-rigging rampant and many people unable to cast ballots.

Opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih defeated Yameen by more than 34 thousand votes, which was accepted by the latter a day after.

Supreme Court has the power to cancel the elections if it feels that the irregularities taken place has the potential to change the results.

United States has said it will consider appropriate measures against anyone who undermine democracy or a free and fair electoral process in the Maldives including any delay to the inauguration scheduled next month.
