Sri Lankan parliament to meet again today
In Sri Lanka, the parliament will meet again Monday even as the all-party conference called by President Maithripala Sirisena last evening could not reach any consensus on resolving the impasse.
The session will be preceded by a party leaders meeting to discuss how to carry out the session proceedings.
President Sirisena said in a statement there was an agreement that party leaders meeting should decide the future proceedings of the Parliament and the Parliamentary session should be conducted peacefully and without any untoward acts.
It also stressed the need for adhering to the standing orders without resorting to voice vote which is not transparent, while voting on an important motion to change the government.
However, United National Party (UNP) led by ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the government side want to drag the impasse by giving excuses of procedure. The party members said it is ready to produce affidavits of more than 113 MPs supporting Wickremsinghe.
The President informed that he could take a decision on the no confidence motion against the government only if a vote is taken by name of the members or by electronic voting.
Sri Lankan parliament has been disrupted since Wednesday on the issue of no confidence motion against new government led by Mahinda Rajapaksa. Speaker has ruled the motion was passed with majority but government MPs have rejected the procedure and alleged the Speaker to be biased.
