President Ram Nath Kovind hold talks with Australian PM Scott Morrison

Day two of President Kovind’s visit began with President Kovind reviewing a Guard of Honours at Admiralty House in Sydney, the Official Residence of Governor General of Australia.

President Kovind is on the first ever Presidential visit to Australia from India, on the invitation of Governor General Peter Cosgrove.

The two leaders held warm and constructive talks. Governor General hosted President Kovind at an official luncheon.

Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison also called on President Kovind.

The two leaders discussed several issues of mutual interest to India and Australia including trade and business ties.

As part of President Kovind’s visit, five agreements have been concluded between India and Australia.

As part of the ongoing celebrations and commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, President Kovind along with Prime Minister Scott Morrison unveiled the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parramatta in New South Wales.

They were joined by the Lord Mayor of the City, Andrew Wilson. 40% of population of Parramatta has Indian origin.

Addressing the gathering President said Mahatma Gandhi belongs not just to India, but to the entire world.

Bapu’s universal teachings have a special resonance in all corners.

President Kovind also addressed the Australian Financial Review Business event. Bilateral trade between India and Australia stands close to $20 billion. Australia’s ‘Indian Economic Strategy’ paper envisages increasing Australian investment in India from the present $10 billion to $100 billion by 2035.

President spelt out the commonalities the two nations share, including shared views for regional co-operation in the Indo-Pacific.

Calling for increased collaboration between the two countries, President said India has renewed its commitment to a liberal, transparent and globalised economy.

He used cricket as a metaphor not just for life but for doing business in India.

President Kovind also addressed the Australia-India Business Council event.

All in all President Kovind’s visit to Australia is certain to add new chapters to India Australia ties.
