Maldives’ former President Abdulla Yameen detained in money laundering case
In Maldives, former President Abdulla Yameen has been taken into detention on Monday for the remainder of his trial in a money laundering case.
Yameen appeared before a criminal court Monday afternoon where the Prosecutor General asked the court to remand him until his trial concludes.
The state prosecutor said that Yameen had attempted to bribe witnesses in order to make them change their testimonies.
After two and a half hours inside the court, the former President was taken to the custodial centre near capital Malé.
The former President and his justice minister are accused of using money stolen from state exchequer.
Yameen lost the Presidential elections held last September to Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who has promised zero tolerance in corruption cases.
