Spain honors India for rescue in Nepal earthquake

The ruling party of Nepal may be trying to move closer to China in the current round but in 2015, India’s readiness to help the victims of the Nepal earthquake has been appreciated globally. Now Spain has recognized India’s cooperation in safeguarding its 71 citizens. In this order on Tuesday, the Spanish government awarded India the prestigious “Grand Cross of Order of Civil Merit” Spain went on tour, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj accepted it from India.

During the natural calamity in Nepal, the help was extended to help under ‘Operation Maitri’. In the morning of April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, in which 9000 people lost their lives and more than 22,000 were injured. When he arrived in Spain in the last episode of Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj’s three-nation tour, she was honored in Spain by her counterpart Joseph Bolele Fontenales in Madrid. Earlier, Sushma had visited Bulgaria and Morocco. Sushma also interacted with Joseph on bilateral, regional and global issues.

During the Nepal earthquake PM Modi talked to his then-time counterpart Sushil Koirala from Nepal and assured him of all possible help. In view of the disaster in the neighboring country, PM Modi convened a meeting of his ministers and top officials and instructed him to start relief and rescue operations and send troops of National Rescue team to Nepal
