Wreath laying ceremony held at Begum Hazrat Mahal’s tomb in Kathmandu
Remembering freedom fighter Begum Hazrat Mahal on her 140th Death Anniversary a wreath laying ceremony was organised at her tomb in Kathmandu, Nepal on Wednesday.
India’s Deputy Chief of Mission Dr. Ajay Kumar laid the wreath at her tomb. A large number of people from Muslim community of Nepal, media persons and officers of the Embassy of India also paid floral tribute to Begum Hazrat Mahal.
She was wife of Awadh’s Nawab Wajid Ali Shah and one of the earliest Indian female freedom fighters.
Begum Hazrat Mahal fought against the British East India Company during the 1857 mutiny.
The British attacked Awadh repeatedly and forced her to retreat. She refused to accept any kind of favors and allowances offered by the British rulers.
Finally, Begum Hazrat Mahal sought asylum in Nepal, where she died on 7 April, 1879. Her tomb is situated atJame Masjid in central Kathmandu.
