Sri Lanka’s security situation 99 percent assured: President Maithripala Sirisena
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has said that the security situation in Sri Lanka was 99 percent ensured and that the emergency could be lifted after the end of its one month extension.
Meeting a group of foreign ambassadors on Monday, the President said the state of emergency was extended due to the search operations conducted by the military and hoped that it would not be required to be extended further.
His comments came as emergency provisions was imposed for a month after Easter Sunday attacks and has been further extended by a month till 21st of next month.
President said that large number of the terrorists and suspects have been arrested and huge quantity of explosives and weapons seized during security operations.
He thanked the envoys for the intelligence expertise and cooperation provided and expressed confidence that with the assistance of foreign expertise on intelligence, the threat of terrorism could be eliminated.
