Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaches Osaka, Japan to attend 14th G20 Summit

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan has a clear agenda of free and fair multilateral trade, energy security, countering terrorism and return of economic fugitives. The Summit is scheduled for 28th and 29th of this month.

Prime Minister is in Japan with a unanimous endorsement by all 55 Asia-Pacific Group members at the UN of India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat of the Security Council for 2 year term but top of the mind will be combating protectionism.

Prime Minister Modi will hold meetings with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders on G20 sidelines. This will be the 6th G20 Summit that he will be participating in since 2014 and the first one of his second term.

G20 members together contribute to almost 85% of global GDP. 19 countries, the European Union and several special invitees are participating at the Osaka Summit which will see discussions at 4 sessions.

After the SCO Summit that holds a strategic importance, this is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first economy focused multilateral meet after he took oath for the second time.

PM Modi said, the summit will provide an important opportunity to reiterate and reinforce India’s strong support to reformed multilateralism, which is crucial for preserving rule-based international order in today’s fast-changing world.

PM also mentions that G20 summit will also be a platform for sharing India’s strong developmental experience of the last five years, which provided the basis for a resounding mandate by the people of the country to the Government to continue on the path to progress and stability.

The Prime Minister said, the Osaka Summit will be an important stepping stone for India towards hosting the G-20 Summit in 2022, when we usher in a New India in the 75th Anniversary of the Independence.

The theme of G20 Summit 2019 is Human-centred future society. Food security, energy security, financial stability, terrorism-related issues, Innovation in the digital economy and artificial intelligence will be discussed. More than 20 countries will be participating in the G20 Summit.
