‘India International Textiles Expo’ begins in Colombo

A three day ‘India International Textiles Expo’ IITExpo began today in Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.

The exhibition cum buyer seller meet is being organized by Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) under Ministry of Textiles with an aim to support Indian manufacturers, exporters and promote marketing of powerloom products.

Sri Lankan Deputy Minister of petroleum resources Anoma Gamage, who was the Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony underlined the strong bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka, and cited the potential to further strengthen the collaboration in the textile sector.

She said that textile industry forms an important pillar of the Sri Lankan economy, given its contribution to GDP, exports and forex earnings etc.

Around 30 exhibitors from all over India are participating in the event, displaying varieties of textiles under ‘Incredible Textiles of India’.

This is the 3rd edition of IITExpo Colombo organized after successful experience in past years.

Sri Lanka has is one of the biggest garment manufacturing hub in the region with more than 5 billion US dollar exports to European Union and other western nations. However, the garment units are mostly dependent on imported fabrics and Indian exporters have good potential for trading of textiles to Sri Lanka.
