Taliban strikes kill at least 48 days before Presidential Election
Taliban attacks kill at least 48 in Afghanistan days before Presidential Elections; suicide bombers attack President Ashraf Ghani’s election rally in Parvan province; another blast in Kabul.
Two separate suicide bombings rocked Afghanistan yesterday, killing at least 48 people and injuring dozens others.
In Parwan province, north of the capital Kabul, an election rally where President Ashraf Ghani was due to speak was attacked, and 26 people died. Another blast, near the US embassy in central Kabul, killed 22 people.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the two attacks. They have refused to talk to the Afghan government and vowed to disrupt the presidential election in the country on 28 September.
On Twitter, the president called the perpetrator “a cowardly enemy”.
U.S. President Donald Trump had described the negotiations with the Taliban as “dead” earlier this month.
