Rohingya Camps to be fenced with barbed wire, says Bangladesh Home Minister

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Thursday said in Dhaka that the camps will be fenced with barbed wire as per the directive of the Prime Minister to maintain law and order in the camps and ensure safety and security.

In the meanwhile Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appealed to the world leaders to take measures to compel Myanmar to create conditions enabling the Rohingyas’ safe, dignified and voluntary repatriation to their ancestral. homes.

Speaking at a function in New York on Wednesday Sheikh Hasina said that the Bangladesh government had built houses, cyclone shelters and food warehouses at Bhashan Char island to shift Rohingyas there.

She said that if they could be relocated to the Bhashan Char , they will get job opportunity and children will get education facilities. She said some organizations working in Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camps don’t want these people to go back and they are trying to prevent them.

The government has developed Bhashan Char as an alternative location to accommodate 1 lakh Rohingya refugees in 1440 buildings constructed there. While the government seems determined to relocate Rohingyas, environmentalists say that the Bhashan Char falls in an ecologically fragile area prone to floods, erosion and cyclone.

A DW news report says that the facilities at the Bhashan Char are certainly better than Cox’s Bazar but the question of the stability of the island remains.
