Jeanine Anez signed a legislation

In Bolivia amid the power struggle in top hierarchy, the interim President Jeanine Anez signed a legislation on Sunday to annul the contested elections on 20 October paving the way for a new vote.

The move which prevents Morales from contesting the presidency in the new ballot, comes as a key step towards ending weeks of unrest.

Protests erupted after a disputed election on October 20, causing severe fuel and food shortages in La Paz and other cities.

The new elections are seen as key to ending Bolivia’s worst political upheaval in 16 years, which has deepened divisions between indigenous people loyal to Morales and Bolivia’s mainly city-dwelling middle and upper classes.
