Hindu widows of Bangladesh get shares in all property – High Court

In a High Court ruling, the Bangladesh High Court has ordered that Hindu widows are entitled to share all the properties of their deceased husbands.

Earlier, the law only entitled Hindu widows to their husband’s homestead property.

A single-judge bench of Justice Muttah Uddin Chaudhary on Wednesday confirmed the verdict of a 2004 lower court ruling that the widow had rights over all her husband’s assets.

Rana Das Gupta, general secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikya Council, outlined the verdict as a historic decision as well as a protective shield to protect Hindu widows.
