European Parliament Elections: Brexit Party surges to crushing victory

The Brexit Party was the clear winner in the European Union Parliamentary elections, with the pro-EU Libral Democrats coming second. Brexit’s victory comes as there is a wave of anger at the failure of Prime Minister Theresa May to take the United Kingdom out of the European Union.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives and Labour have suffered heavy losses, with the former expected to get less than 10% of the votes. Overall, out of 64 MEPs declared so far, Farage’s party has won 28, the Libral Democrats 15, Labour 10, Greens seven, the Tories three and Plaid Cymru one.

On the victory, Farage said he wanted to be involved in Brexit negotiations and warned that British politics was on the cusp of major upheaval unless Brexit took place on Oct. 31.

Meanwhile, voters in the EU member states expressed different views. While the elections are of great importance for the future of the EU, some voters who came to vote, said they were not expecting much.

The United Kingdom was supposed to have left European Union on March 29 but it remains a member of the group and its politicians are still arguing over how, when or even whether the country will leave the club that it joined in 1973.

Citizens of EU’s member states – over 400 million eligible voters- exercised their franchise from May 23 to 26 to elect 751 members of the European Parliament for a five-year term in the elections that are held every five years.
