Hurricane Dorian: Hundreds trapped in North Carolina

In USA, North Carolina’s state governor warns hundreds of people may be trapped in an island amid rising floodwater after Hurricane Dorian made landfall. The storm struck the islands popular with holidaymakers days after causing at least 30 deaths in the Bahamas.

Category 1 Hurricane Dorian made landfall over Cape Hatteras Island in North Carolina on Friday, battering the islands with torrential rain, ferocious winds and dangerous rising floodwaters.

Governor said that hundreds of people are feared trapped on the island amid rising floodwater. About 800 people remained on the island during the hurricane, which is now without electricity.

The National Hurricane Center said Dorian is expected to pick up speed from its 14 mph crawl.

The damage appeared to be far less severe than in the Bahamas, where catastrophic devastation left at least 70,000 people in need of immediate humanitarian relief.
