Coastal areas face rain, tidal waves caused by cyclone Yaas in Bangladesh
The coastal areas of Bangladesh experienced moderate to heavy showers and high tidal waves under the impact of the cyclone Yaas which bypassed the coast of Bangladesh and made landfall on the Odisha- West Bengal coast around noon time.
Under the impact of the cyclone, rivers are inundated and embankments breached at several places in Satkhira district. The flooding started Tuesday night. The district administration has arranged for make-shift cyclone shelters for the people in schools, colleges and madrasas.
Three people were injured and 50 houses damaged due to the storm in the Jhenaidah district on Tuesday night. In the Bhola district a person died due to the storm caused by the cyclone in Lalmohan upazila, reports the UNB. The Char areas of Bhola district have been receiving rain and strong wind since the evening of Tuesday. Low lying areas of the district have been inundated as the Meghna river swelled due to the impact of cyclone Yaas. Many embankments have also been damaged.
The State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief told the media in Dhaka on Wednesday that Cyclone Yaas has crossed the coast of India and Bangladesh is now free from its danger. However, people of 9 coastal districts have been affected by the high tides.
