Data theft: Whistleblower Christopher Wylie puts Congress in dock
BJP has demanded a full apology from Congress and its President Rahul Gandhi following the startling revelations by Christopher Wylie, a former employee with Cambridge Analytica who blew the whistle on the controversial firms contracts all over the world. Wylie has said that one of the firms for CA could have been congress, and this confession is bound to create more ripples in Indian politics in days to come.
Christopher Wylie, a former employee with Cambridge Analytica has claimed that the firm worked extensively in India. While deposing before the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the UK Parliament Wylie said that he believed that one of the clients was Congress. He said that the firm did all sorts of projects including regional works. He added that CA does have offices and staff in India. He also claimed that he might have some documentary proof on the company’s work in India, which he could provide to the committee.
Immediate political reactions followed. After the revelation, BJP has upped the ante on the congress and demanded resignation of congress president Rahul Gandhi.
BJP has also claimed that the congress campaign during Gujarat Assembly elections last year had a clear imprint of Cambridge analytica.
The British political data analytics company is accused of using the private data of more than five crore Facebook users to influence voters during 2016 presidential elections in the United States. Wylie has laready submitted documents which may have covered the role of Cambridge Analytica in elections round the world, including the Brexit campaign and the 2016 elections in the United States. The latest revelations are bound to increase political temperatures in Indian politics and increase the war of words between the congress and the BJP which have in the past accused each other of aligning with the controversial firm.
