Embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday won a confidence vote and averted a general election, a day after her government suffered a parliamentary defeat over her Brexit divorce deal with the European Union. Her government won by 325 votes to 306 – a majority of 19.
After the results of the confidence vote were announced to cheers from her Conservative MPs, British Prime Minister Theresa May said she believed parliament had a duty to find a solution that delivered on the 2016 Brexit referendum result.
She said that she would “continue to work to deliver on the solemn promise to the people of this country to deliver on the result of the referendum and leave the European Union”.
May has appealed the MPs from across the political divide to come together to break the impasse over Brexit.
