Venezuela crisis: US sending aid ‘at Guaidó’s request’

The United States said it is sending humanitarian aid to crisis-hit Venezuela following a request from the opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who has declared himself interim President.

Juan Guaidó’s move last month won swift backing from the US and others but triggered a power struggle.

The Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has accused him of mounting a coup and retains major international allies.

He has dismissed US offers of aid as a pretext for military intervention.

Meanwhile, US President Trump, in an interview to a news channel said military intervention in Venezuela was under consideration as Western nations boost pressure on socialist leader Nicolas Maduro to step down. However Russia has warned against “destructive meddling.”

International support gathers for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as United Kingdom, Spain, France and Sweden recognize him as interim president.
